SSU Training Requirements

As instructors with Smugglers' Notch's Snow Sport University, our goal is to create a fun, safe, and enriching experience for guests and staff in order to inspire a lifetime passion for the mountains and provide the highest quality snow sport programming. In order to meet this goal, effective training for all of us is critical. SSU provides instructional training for all our instructors.

Pre-season training: Mid November-December (this is where the bulk of required training falls)
On-going training: January 1st - Mid-March

Pre-Season Training

New Staff (1st year at Smuggs):

All new hired staff are required to complete 32 hours of pre-season training & 8 hours of on-going training.
New hire training (No previous experience): For those new to snowsport instruction, you will be introduced to skiing and riding concepts important to you as an instructor, and teaching skills you'll need when you're out on the hill with a group, such as group management and customer service. We will also provide all the information you need to know about Smuggs' and SSU, from administrative policies, the programs we offer, and resort layout just to name a few.
New hire staff (With previous experience): For those New to Smugglers’, but with significant previous experience, you may be provided with a more customized training plan based on your experience and Certification. Contact Greg Fatigate for more information.

Returning Staff:

All 2nd season to 6th season staff are required to complete 16 hours of pre-season training.
All staff with more than 6 season of experience at Smugglers’ are required to complete 8 hours of preseason training

On-going Training

On-going training, or professional development, is the best opportunity you have to better yourself professionally, and as a skier or rider. New staff members are required to attend 8 hours of on-going training. Look for required clinics such as FAST (freestyle awareness safety training) and transition to Sterling & Madonna.
If you are looking for more specific topics such as PSIA & AASI exam training, talk with your fellow staff members, find common time to train, and work out the plan with Greg.
